The band’s official video archive identifies A Question of Time (1986) as Corbijn’s first Depeche Mode video. Strangelove followed in 1987. That chronology gives us a clear place to begin watching the collaboration develop.

Look beyond the performance
Our viewing suggestion is to notice how a figure sits within the frame. Is the face close enough to read? Does the setting overwhelm the person? Does a gesture feel assured, theatrical, or deliberately awkward? These questions let the images remain open, rather than reducing every prop to a fixed symbol.
The textures of an image matter too. Grain, shadow and areas of empty space can change the way a familiar face is perceived. A visual interpretation does not require us to invent a particular camera mechanism or claim that every film used the same process.
The rose: an image you remember
The red rose on Violator offers a compact starting point for interpretation. To our eyes, its combination of a delicate subject and a stark setting can suggest affection and unease together. Those are possible readings of the finished artwork, not a quotation of the designer’s intention.
Look at the sleeve before playing the album, then return to it afterwards. Does the music change the image? A symbol can gain force through repeated encounters with a record, even when the listener never settles on one meaning.

Faces and faith
The title Songs of Faith and Devotion invites religious associations, but the artwork need not be treated as a coded illustration of a specific painting. Our suggested approach is to look at the band portraits and ask how the arrangement changes your sense of the individuals and the group.
Reading solemnity, vulnerability or the suggestion of an icon into a portrait is different from establishing the artist’s historical reference. Both kinds of enquiry are valuable; they need different evidence.
