This is an independent MODE UNKNOWN editorial collection, not an official Anton Corbijn catalogue raisonné. It combines documented history, linked primary material and clearly signposted critical readings. The scope runs from his early photography through recent work and exhibition information checked on 12 September 2026.

How the evidence is used

Artist interviews establish what Corbijn says about his approach. Collaborator interviews supply perspectives on shared work. Official band records establish particular video credits and versions. Museum and publisher pages establish the scope and presentation of exhibitions and books. Contemporary reporting fills identified gaps rather than replacing a more direct source where one is available.

Interpretations of an image’s emotional or symbolic effect are editorial readings. They should not be mistaken for a quotation from Corbijn or for proof of a subject’s private psychological state. The collection avoids reproducing long passages from interviews and directs readers to the originals.

Attribution notes

Corbijn’s first Depeche Mode video is A Question of Time (1986). This is not a claim that he had never photographed the band before that year. A first encounter and the beginning of a sustained creative partnership are different milestones.

Richard Smith and Area belong in the sleeve-design account. Steve Averill belongs in the account of U2’s visual presentation. Matt Greenhalgh and Martin Ruhe belong in the Control discussion. The Sacred Egg directed Wagging Tongue, with Corbijn providing creative direction. These distinctions preserve the contributions of collaborators rather than weakening the case for Corbijn’s importance.

Date and scope notes

Personal Jesus: the official video archive says 1990; the band’s single-release feature gives 29 August 1989. (Depeche Mode official archives) The directory explicitly labels its date as the archive’s value. Some YoYo Stuff: the agency biography uses 1993, while some catalogues use 1994. This collection does not claim to have resolved the difference between production and initial circulation dates.

Switzerland: Fotografiska’s biography states that Corbijn directed the film in 2025. That is recorded as a production milestone, not a verified release date. Exhibition pages are dated records; an old “now showing” statement is not treated as current availability.

The music-video directory covers 76 consulted official-archive entries and one additional sourced later work. It is not an exhaustive filmography of every video, commercial, concert production and alternate edit from Corbijn’s career. The reading route is similarly selective rather than an inventory of every edition.

Images and moving-image sources

Photographs are linked in their museum, publisher or artist-representative contexts. Credits belong to the original makers and rights holders. Hosted video embeds retain their providers and include fallback links. A reference link or draft embed does not assert ownership of the work by MODE UNKNOWN.
