Leave in Silence: where BONG began
The first BONG catalogue number also opens a path into the quieter side of A Broken Frame.
A number with a long afterlife
Leave in Silence was the first UK Depeche Mode single to use the BONG prefix. The archive dates 7 BONG 1 to 16 August 1982. Its twelve-inch offered Leave in Silence (Longer), Further Excerpt From: My Secret Garden and Leave in Silence (Quieter). Those titles describe a release with more than one direction of travel. [1]
Longer is not the only invitation
Our interpretation begins with that last word: Quieter. Extended singles often invite us to expect more duration, more rhythm or more repetition. Here the packaging also offers a different level of intensity. Compare the versions without deciding in advance that the longest one must contain the most interesting detail.
Build a three-part listening room
Start with the single, move into the My Secret Garden material, then finish with Quieter. Give the spaces between tracks a few seconds. Does the sequence feel like a miniature record in its own right? Catalogue numbers are useful for finding objects, but track order can help us find an experience. BONG 1 is both an administrative beginning and a small invitation to listen beyond the obvious song.
