Get the Balance Right includes My Secret Garden, See You, Satellite and Tora! Tora! Tora! on its limited twelve-inch. The chronology folds back on itself

The striking feature is the coexistence of new single releases with performances from an earlier moment. A buyer following the new material could turn the record over and hear the band’s recent past. The package did not need to announce itself as a retrospective for that contrast to exist.

Our interpretation is that this makes the singles an intimate form of live archive. They ask for a smaller commitment than a concert film or a double album. A handful of performances becomes the other half of an object you may have bought for one new song.

Do not silently rebuild a concert

A tempting next step is to join the tracks and call the result a complete show. The listings alone do not justify that. A reconstructed playlist is your listening sequence unless you have separately verified the original set order, completeness and sources.

There is no need to make the evidence larger than it is. Compare one of the live tracks with its studio recording, paying attention to the shape of the performance rather than deciding which version is best. Listen for the way a familiar part occupies a different amount of space.

The pleasure here is discovering that the history was not confined to releases with LIVE printed across the front. Some of it travelled quietly on the reverse of a single, waiting for somebody to keep listening after the advertised song.
