MODE UNKNOWN / THE LONG SHADOW / SECOND MOVEMENT
THE
ALBUMS
Seven later transformations. The same band image tested by survival, renewal, conflict, age and loss.

The journey continues: survival after addiction → cautious renewal → sharpened aggression → analogue futurism → weathered blues → political unease → mortality and absence.

Across the Coals
Survival is not a return. It is the next barefoot step.
After the collapse of the previous era and Alan’s departure, the band continues as three. Dave crosses the last heat toward Martin and Andy; an unoccupied fourth chair keeps the change visible.
Survival after addiction: pain, endurance and forward motion.

02 / 2001 / Exciter
The Room Breathes
After survival, the first transformation is air.
A translucent room expands and contracts around three separate figures. Dave presses against its skin while Martin and Andy hold the fragile structure open.
Cautious renewal: closeness returns without pretending the damage vanished.

03 / 2005 / Playing the Angel
The Hands That Judge
Grace and accusation hang from the same wire.
Porcelain hands descend around the trio: blessing, blame and performance made indistinguishable. Dave breaks the hand offered to him while the others inhabit the consequences.
Sharpened aggression: the body becomes both weapon and evidence.

04 / 2009 / Sounds of the Universe
The Listening Machine
Old machinery loses gravity while the song searches upward.
Reels, speakers and pieces of analogue equipment rise through an impossible observatory. Dave listens from the ladder; Martin follows the cable; Andy holds the distant signal steady.
Analogue futurism: yesterday’s instruments tuned toward an unknown sky.

05 / 2013 / Delta Machine
Pressure Makes a River
The machine does not make them younger. It makes the years visible.
The trio occupies a colossal press built from battered steel. Dave climbs the folded metal, Martin listens to its vibration and Andy turns the wheel that keeps the structure moving.
Weathered blues: human friction forced through industrial weight.

06 / 2017 / Spirit
Against the Current
When the crowd moves as one, resistance begins by remaining visible.
Empty coats surge in a single direction, joined by a thin red thread. Dave forces a path against them while Martin remains behind as witness, holding the blank page on which meaning must still be made.
Political unease: two recognisable faces among a procession without identity.

07 / 2023 / Memento Mori
What Remains Between
Absence becomes part of the image the survivors must carry.
Dave and Martin hold opposite ends of a damaged negative. Where the third figure might have stood, the emulsion has disappeared and silver rises into the dark: two people, one shared history and a space that cannot be filled.
Mortality and absence: reflection after Andy Fletcher, and the quiet decision to continue.
MODE UNKNOWN / THE ALBUMS
What remains moves forward.
Seven albums. Three lives becoming two. One image altered by survival, age and absence.
