A song is never only a song
Before the record there are hands, breath, doubt, discipline—and the strange chemistry of people who do not need to move in time to arrive at the same place.
Presence follows the individuals inside Depeche Mode without separating them from the sound they made together. Songwriting becomes performance. Performance becomes arrangement. Arrangement becomes memory.
Begin with the person, then listen for what changed when somebody else entered the room.
The song is where the separate lives meet.
Follow the work, not the mythology
The most revealing stories are rarely the loudest ones. They live in a harmony placed beneath the obvious melody, a stage gesture that changes the scale of a song, a sound rebuilt until its source disappears, or the steady human presence that allows everybody else to become larger.
These paths carry the story outward—from the people, into the room, and finally into the world that formed around the music.
People leave the room. Their decisions remain in the tape.
