Inside the release

The band's first single was released in the UK on 20 February 1981, with Ice Machine on the reverse. There was no original twelve-inch release. Its US release followed much later through the 1991 singles box sets.

Listen closer

Listen without trying to hear the later band arriving ahead of time. The small, bright electronic shapes have their own appeal, and the vocal gives them a recognisable human scale.

Another way in

Turn to Ice Machine immediately afterwards. Hearing both sides restores a little of the uncertainty of a beginning: more than one possible direction was already present.
