Freelove: the DVD single with a backstage life
A small disc held a concert montage, audio performances and four glimpses behind the curtain.
A single that could be watched
The official archive describes the Freelove DVD’s live video as a montage of stage and backstage footage. Breathe and The Dead of Night are audio-only; all three performances were recorded in Philadelphia on 30 June 2001. Four short clips add a meet-and-greet, Black Celebration live, Dave on the Freelove video set and an In Your Room soundcheck. [1]
The moments around a performance
Our interpretation is that these fragments ask for a different kind of attention from a complete concert film. A soundcheck exposes preparation. A meeting with fans shows the social space around a show. Backstage footage changes the distance between performer and viewer. Brief scenes can alter how you remember the much longer performance beside them.
Make a small evening of it
If you have the DVD, watch the montage before exploring the extras. Then listen to an audio-only track without searching for a picture to accompany it. What does your imagination supply? For more concert viewing, continue into Transmission. The appeal of the single is its modest scale: an evening can begin with something tucked away beside a song you already know.
